March 28 – March 31, 2014

Today’s Good News
During the Hanover County Sheriff’s Department annual award ceremony last week, Sheriff David Hines recognized RPD Fourth Precinct Sergeant D.A. Miles for his tremendous help in fighting regional scrap metal theft issues. “Due to his access to a large amount of information within the City of Richmond concerning scrap yards, Sergeant Miles has always provided timely information to the Sheriff’s Office. Initially, Sergeant Miles had only one contact within the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office for metal theft information. But as cases began to increase, he was sought out by others within our agency for information,” the sheriff said.

“Numerous arrests have been made based on assistance from Sergeant Miles, and his work is a model of cooperation between jurisdictions for crime that knows no boundary. Though he was reassigned within the police department, Sergeant Miles felt a focus on combating metal thefts was so important he maintained his contacts with area investigators. Even after he was reassigned to a different area of responsibility, he continued to be the “go-to guy” for metal related thefts.

“Sergeant Miles is retiring at the end of May 2014 after 31 years of police service. His assistance will be sorely missed. For his hard work and dedication to the Hanover Sheriff’s Office and his commitment to making a positive impact in the community, we recognize Sgt. Miles for the Excellent Service to Law Enforcement. Thank you Sergeant Miles!”

Today’s Good News
First Precinct Sergeant Jayson Walter was working an off duty assignment at a city business last night, but that didn’t stop him from going above and beyond the call of duty to help a homeless veteran. Sergeant Walter has often seen and spoken with this veteran many times. Last night, he knew how cold it was and that the man had nowhere to stay. So Sergeant Walter gave his own money and asked a fellow officer to run to the store and buy the veteran a sleeping bag and pair of gloves to keep him warm. Though Sergeant Walter could not leave his place of duty, he wanted to make sure the veteran stayed warm. Thank you, Sergeant Walter, for your kindness and for going above and beyond.

Today’s Good News
Thanks to an observant citizen and fast-responding Third Precinct officers, a quick arrest was made in a weekend burglary that may help detectives solve several other crimes. Shortly before 2 a.m. on Sunday, a citizen heard a loud noise and spotted a man breaking into a residence in the Fan. He quickly called police and Officer Steven Gibson gathered and broadcast the suspect’s description. A short time later, sharp-eyed Officers Brian Sheridan and William Campbell spotted a man matching that description on Lakeview Avenue and detained him for questioning. After further investigation by Detective Jack Larry, the man was identified by the witness and charged with burglary and grand larceny. Additional investigations are ongoing. Good work officers and thank you observant citizen!

March 21 – March 24, 2014

Today’s Good News
Criminals aren’t always the sharpest knives in the drawer. Take this incident for example: First Precinct Officer James Peck and Master Patrol Officer Sharon Slavey recently responded to a downtown business to investigate a report of a man who had broken into the restaurant and stolen alcohol. After further investigation with Detectives Tori Wilson and David Cuffley, officers were able to broadcast a detailed suspect description. Less than five hours later, keen-eyed Officer Lemont Carey spotted the suspect on South 14th Street and took him into custody. On the man’s person they found a bottle of alcohol—complete with the pour spout still on top of the bottle. Good work officers!
