Today’s Good News

Some investigations can be quite challenging for detectives, but it’s their perseverance that often solves the case. That was the situation recently for First Precinct Detective Brian Taylor who obtained a surveillance image of a robbery suspect that, though grainy, clearly showed the robber’s distinctive clothing. After giving patrol officers the image and information, Officers Adrian Jenkins and Ronald McClarin spotted the suspect while on patrol. Though the man took off running, the officers quickly arrested him.

However, Detective Taylor could not reach the victim to make a positive identification and had to release the suspect after recording his information. Not giving up, Detective Taylor investigated further and learned the suspect had lied about his identity to conceal the fact that he was wanted. When spotted by police, the suspect ran again, but was recaptured, later identified as the robber by the victim and also linked to robberies in the Second Precinct area. Thanks to this great police work, follow through and teamwork displayed by these officers, a violent offender has been removed from city streets. Good work!

After seeing Second Precinct Officer Monica Powell’s selection as the Department’s Officer of the Month last month, a woman emailed to thank Officer Powell for the impact she had on her life. “I am writing this to tell you that I am very appreciative for you being on the RPD force. Months ago you responded to a domestic dispute at my residence where I just wanted to have my then boyfriend of many years to leave. Since that day I have clearly opened my eyes to life as a single woman and parent. Listening to you speak to us showed me that I am worth more than I showed myself. It also made me see that my life weighed on my children,” she wrote.

“I just wanted to tell you thank you for being you at that time and that I truly thank God for you. You truly are Officer of the Year--not just Month--in my eyes.”

Today’s Good News
Third Precinct and K-9 officers recently responded to a residence on Hanover Avenue for a report of a mid-morning burglary. As officers set up a perimeter, K-9 Sgt. Michael Bohannon and K-9 Vader tracked the suspect’s scent to Stuart Avenue where officers found another home that had been broken into. Minutes later, they received a tip from citizens about two suspicious individuals a few blocks away. Officers Jay Riley, John Raina, Ronald Thurston and Ralph Mills quickly responded and detained the two juvenile suspects. Further investigation revealed the pair was involved in both burglaries. Today’s Good News

A tip for criminals: If you’re going to break into a house and then hide when police arrive, you might want to wait until officers leave before trying to get away. One burglar found that out the hard way recently when First Precinct Officers James Peck and Lemont Carey responded to a home on Bainbridge Avenue for a burglar alarm. As they set up a perimeter and began to investigate, the burglar crawled out of the basement window and was subsequently arrested. After being found with stolen items on his person and being interviewed by Detective David Cuffley, he was charged with burglary and petit larceny.

Today’s Good News

Kudos to Officer John Raina who was named Third Precinct’s Officer of the Month for December! After a rash of 20-plus burglaries in the Fan, Randolph and Maymont neighborhoods last month, Officer Raina took it personally. He pursued every angle he could think of with precinct detectives to put a stop to the crimes, and his hard work paid off. During an investigation of a stolen credit card, Officer Raina arrested one man for credit card theft and seven counts of grand larceny. That investigation also assisted Henrico County Police with the clearing of 15 burglary cases there.

But Officer Raina didn’t stop there. He continued his efforts to decrease property crimes and educate the community by distributing 150 crime flyers in the areas plagued by burglaries, and he was part of an integral team that distributed more than 6,000 vehicle break-in safety tip flyers throughout the month. As a result of those efforts, vehicle break-ins are down nearly 70 percent compared to the previous month. Thank you Officer Raina!

Today’s Good News

Kudos to Officer Matthew Segal who was named Second Precinct’s Officer of the Month for December! From catching robbers to seizing large amounts of drugs, Officer Segal made a big impact in the city last month. He made 11 felony arrests, assisted 25 units and responded to nearly 100 radio and sight calls. During one incident, Officer Segal and another officer stopped to investigate three men suspected in a pair of armed robberies. Though the men took off running, Officer Segal helped catch one of them and seized a firearm. The two caught were later charged with numerous crimes, both in the city and Henrico.

Later that month, Officer Segal showed off his detective skills after his good interview of an offender generated a tip about the drug dealer’s supplier. That investigation resulted in the seizure of marijuana, cocaine, a firearm and a large amount of cash. Arrest warrants are pending and that investigation remains ongoing. Thank you Officer Segal!

Today’s Good News

Kudos to Officer Michael Bryson who was named First Precinct’s Officer of the Month for December! Officer Michael Bryson’s quick response and knowledge of his sector was instrumental last month in the safe arrest of two armed offenders. As the midnight shift officer responded to investigate a report of two men armed with an assault rifle, he spotted one man trying hide in a wooded area, and safely detained him. As other officers arrested the second man, Officer Bryson recognized him and listened as the man repeatedly gave the officers a false name despite multiple chances to come clean.

Once Officer Bryson revealed man’s true identity, officers discovered he had nine outstanding warrants! Officer Bryson’s keen observation and tactically sound approach resulted in a dangerous offender being safely removed from city streets. Combine this with Officer Bryson’s 32 radio calls, 13 executed warrants and 6 arrests during only 10 days of work last month and you have an outstanding Officer of the Month for December! Thank you Officer Bryson!

Today’s Good News

A man recently emailed to commend Sector 412 Lt. Chris Gleason, Officer Gene Carter, Detective Sarah Powell and all of the Sector 412 officers for their hard work to rid his Barton Avenue neighborhood of several drug dealers who bring numerous problems to the area. “Lt. Gleason has been in charge of our area since the summer. In that time he has been very aggressive in investigating and patrolling our community. He has been very good about communicating with me about the issues on the block and there has been a visible drop in the amount of illegal activity on our block.

“Another officer I wish to point out is Officer Carter. He has been very visible on patrols and has been instrumental in obtaining evidence that recently resulted in a major player in the drug trafficking on our street being charged with several felonies. I would also like to give praise to Detective Powell who has been very accommodating and helpful in helping us create a formal watch group on our block. Kudos to these officers and to the others of Sector 412. Thank you again for your help in these matters.”

Today’s Good News

A man recently wrote to commend Third Precinct Officer William McAuliffe for his stellar service. “We had a house fire beside our home, called 911, and I truly believe we would have lost our home if not for the prompt response by Officer McAuliffe to the scene. The fire was on the edge of becoming a major blaze, and because he arrived when he did, before the fire trucks, Officer McAuliffe truly saved the day,” the man wrote.

“His professionalism was beyond reproach, and he stayed until the fire department gave us the all clear. I truly hope this message ends up in front of the correct person so Officer McAuliffe's actions are seen and recognized by the rest of the department. I am truly thankful for his presence. Many thanks to one and all!”
