Today’s Good News

Thanks to the hard work of several Third Precinct officers, a career criminal responsible for breaking into numerous vehicles has been removed from city streets. Officer Stacy Rogers took the lead and assisted Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Caitlin Kelly in presenting a case that resulted in the thief receiving eight years of previously suspended prison time!

“It is absolutely attributable to Officer Rogers’ dogged commitment on behalf of the residents of Sector 312 that we achieved such a stellar result,” Kelly said. “His diligent attention not only to the offender’s activities while he was out of jail, but the fact that he has steadfastly followed through and kept up with the prosecutions is THE reason this man will be off the street for the better part of the next decade. Officer Rogers should be commended for his efforts. He has really done something special for the residents of 312.”

Officers Stirrett and Burlingham worked together to quickly secure the residence and obtain a search warrant. Once inside, they recovered a pound of marijuana, packaging paraphernalia and $700 in cash. The occupant was arrested for possession of marijuana with intent to distribute. Great work officers!

Today’s Good News

Note to criminals: If you’re going to steal a moped, you may not want to ride it in the neighborhood where you stole it. Then again, we appreciate the assistance. That was the case recently when Second Precinct Officer Matthew Segal responded to investigate a stolen moped from a supermarket on the Southside. When Officer Segal looked at the surveillance footage, he saw two juveniles stealing the moped and, later that evening, received a call from the moped owner who said he had seen two young men riding his moped nearby. Officer Segal used his police training to observe the suspects while patrolling in an unmarked vehicle. With the assistance of Officers James Hogan, Crystal Nuckols, Tanner Braaten and Jonathan Myers, Officer Segal attempted to stop the moped, but the driver dropped the moped and the pair ran away. Officers Myers and Segal gave chase and arrested the two suspects quickly. Both juveniles confessed and the moped was returned to its rightful owner. Good work all!

Today’s Good News

With the help of some watchful eyes in the community, Third Precinct Officers Michael Kiniry and Glendon Cox were able to stop a burglar right in his tracks. These helpful citizens informed the officers they had seen a suspicious man hop out of a vehicle and approach the back door of a city church. The suspect then attempted to pry open the door, triggering the church’s alarm. Startled by the noise, the would-be burglar ran to his vehicle and drove away from the scene. But thanks to the officers’ speedy response and impressive investigative work, they were able to catch and arrest the suspect just 33 minutes after the incident occurred! The suspect was charged with breaking into the church and possession of burglary tools. Good teamwork everyone!

Today’s Good News

A man recently robbed a taxi driver on North 26th Street, but First Precinct officers and detectives were able to identify and arrest him within hours of the crime! Officers Gaetano Drago and Nathaniel Reese were the first officers to respond and gathered information about the suspect from the victim. That was enough for Detective George Mihalcoe to put together a solid photo lineup from which the victim identified the robber. Officer Drago then drove through the area where the robber lived and spotted him. Though the robber ran away, Officer Drago gave chase and safely arrested the man after finding him hiding under a porch on P Street. Detective Mihalcoe interviewed the man and charged him with robbery. Good work everyone!

Today’s Good News

Thanks to the good observation skills of First Precinct Officers Brent Howlett and David Woods and the good investigative work by Detective George Mihalcoe, a prolific burglary ring was brought to a screeching halt recently. The officers were patrolling on Everett Avenue just before midnight recently when they noticed two men walking and pulling a Supercan. They stopped and identified the men and discovered two flat screen TVs inside. After consulting with Detective Mihalcoe, they released the men, but seized the TVs and researched their serial numbers. When they discovered the TVs were in fact stolen, they obtained warrants and arrested one of the men.

During an interview with Detective Mihalcoe, that man confessed to multiple burglaries, including some that hadn’t even been reported yet, and identified the two cohorts that assisted him. Detective Mihalcoe was able to identify 27 total incidents and solve 18 reported burglaries. Good work!

After arresting the suspect for felony eluding police, driving on a suspended license and providing false information to police, Officer Myers discovered the suspect also had five outstanding warrants on file. Today’s Good News

Kudos to Officer Harry Brown who was named Third Precinct’s Officer of the Month for January! Officer Brown is the type of officer that can get just bits and pieces of information and yet still put the full puzzle together. He did that several times last month and solved cases ranging from stolen checks to larcenies. Part of that success is due to the great relationships he’s built in Sector 312. He often attends neighborhood watch meetings and works directly with local business loss prevention officers to advise them and stay abreast of what’s going on.

Officer Brown’s positive attitude and can-do work ethic show through in every shift, and the Department is lucky to have such a dedicated and talented officer. Thank you Officer Brown!

Today’s Good News

Kudos to Officer Lemont Carey who was named First Precinct’s Officer of the Month for January!

If it weren’t for Officer Carey, a prolific East End burglar might still be breaking into homes. Officer Carey responded to the initial burglary call, spotted the burglar running and took off after him. Despite a long foot pursuit, Officer Carey refused to give up, caught the suspect and detectives later cleared 8 cases from that one arrest!

Throughout the month of January, Officer Carey spent 15 hours on walking patrol, made 20 merchant visits, served 7 warrants and responded to 98 radio calls. No task is too small for this 7-year veteran and he takes every opportunity to make a good arrest, keep the community safe, and make sure the Department is represented well. Thank you Officer Carey!

Today’s Good News

Richmond Police officers don’t just respond to calls for help. They also get to know lots of citizens within their communities. That information recently helped Second Precinct officers make two quick arrests in an armed robbery case on Jefferson Davis Highway. Officer Joseph Dillon was the first officer on scene and gathered information about the two robbers who were only known to the victim by their nicknames. Officer Todd Hall immediately knew who the robbers were based on the nicknames and their physical descriptions, which helped Detective Derrick Longoria create an accurate photo lineup to show the victim. The robbers were positively identified and warrants are pending for their arrest. Good work!
