Today’s Good News

Sometimes all officers have to do is follow the fresh footprints in the snow to catch a criminal. That was partly the case this past Sunday evening when Second Precinct Officer Michael Eldridge responded to investigate a robbery on Cargreen Road. After Officer Eldridge spoke with the victim and witnesses, he recalled seeing a man matching the robber’s description near a house on his way to the scene. He advised Officers Mark Levy and Danielle Warren who went to the home and searched the residence. Though they didn’t find the suspect, Officer Levy noticed footprints in the snow leading from the back door to underneath the house. He followed the prints and arrested the suspect after finding him huddled in a corner. With the assistance of Detective Derrick Longoria, the male was interviewed and charged with robbery. Good work all!

Today’s Good News

Fourth Precinct Detective John Walker was recently patrolling downtown when he heard a noise on North 2nd Street and went to investigate. As he pulled around the corner, he noticed a vehicle with a broken window and spotted a possible suspect quickly walking away from the area. When he stopped the suspect, he noticed the man had shards of broken glass on his clothing and when he searched him, he found several items that he would soon discover were stolen. Further investigation revealed the suspect had broken into at least five vehicles that night and was connected to other crimes along Chamberlayne Avenue. He was subsequently arrested and charged. Today’s Good News

Thanks to an observant citizen, Second Precinct officers were recently able to make a good arrest of two men who were “scrapping,” also known as stealing metal. The issue is one of the biggest problems in the city when it comes to property crimes because the thieves are selling whatever they can get to local metal recyclers. But thanks to an alert citizen in Davee Gardens who noticed the scrapping in progress and called police, Second Precinct Focus Mission Team Officers Obie Arrington, Richard McTernan, Jason Holt, Michael Spinos and Detective Derrick Longoria were able to quickly respond, arrest the men and recover the stolen metal. Good work everyone!

As Officer Spinos investigated further, the man admitted he lied and gave his real identity, which resulted in his arrest for trespassing, providing false information and four outstanding warrants for attempted murder, probation violation and two firearm charges related to being a convicted felon. Other officers had been searching for the man for a while in connection to several crimes on the Southside. Good work Officer Spinos!

Today’s Good News

A woman recently emailed to thank Third Precinct Officer Jay Riley for the kind way he handled a traffic accident where the young driver, who had just received a learner’s permit, had accidentally, and quite suddenly, struck a parked car. Though the experience was upsetting for everyone involved, the woman wrote that Officer Riley “was really wonderful in responding to all of us, especially my very-shaken and near-hysterical teen.” The woman continued: “Officer Riley was kind, respectful, and empathetic.

“I know you all have a lot going on in the City, and I felt bad about even calling you for such a minor incident. But please know how much my child and I appreciate the way I which Officer Riley responded. I hope he is somehow recognized for it!”

Today’s Good News

Fourth Precinct Officer Robert Jamison recently responded to investigate what he thought was a pedestrian who had run into a tree, but he quickly determined that wasn't the case. Even though witnesses weren't very helpful and the pedestrian was a homeless man with some challenges, Officer Jamison stayed with the victim to the hospital to speak with him further. He was then able to figure out that what appeared to be an accident was actually an aggravated assault committed by another individual known to Officer Jamison thanks to his good knowledge of those in his sector. Officer Jamison secured warrants for the offender, which were served when the man was arrested in Louisiana and extradited back to Richmond. Good work Officer Jamison!

Today’s Good News

First Precinct Officer Kelly Morley was on a directed patrol in the Oak Grove neighborhood recently when she smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from a residence on Dinwiddie Avenue. While waiting for Officer Richard Chappell to obtain a search warrant for the residence, Officers Morley and Tori Wilson detained two occupants who tried to leave the home. A subsequent search of the residence revealed 19 marijuana plants—a street value of 42 pounds—as well as numerous marijuana grow operation paraphernalia. Both men were arrested and the investigation remains ongoing

Today’s Good News

A thief recently tried to hide from our officers by changing the vehicle she drove, but that wasn’t enough to fool First Precinct Officer Sharon Slavey! After Officer Slavey received information that the woman—a suspect in several thefts at local gyms—lived in the Oakwood neighborhood, she made it her mission to find her and put a stop to the thefts. She knew where the woman had been staying and the type of car she drove, but the woman tried to elude capture by driving a different vehicle. Officer Slavey quickly identified that other vehicle, found and arrested the woman. She was then served with 24 outstanding warrants! Good work Officer Slavey!

As he looked around, he noticed several individuals looking upset and repeatedly looking at a vehicle in the parking lot. Officer Boxley pulled the man off of the female, but the man refused to be handcuffed and tried to reach for the officer’s gun. With the assistance of Officers Kurtis Jinks and Timothy Wade, the man was safely taken into custody and charged with several felonies. Good work officers and good observation Officer Boxley!

Today’s Good News

Kudos to Officer Donnie Watkins who was named Fourth Precinct’s Officer of the Month for February! It’s Officer Watkins’ “no nonsense” approach that really makes a difference in Sector 412. He tirelessly patrols side streets and alleys looking for all types of crimes because it realizes it’s the little things that can really make a difference. For example, last month he noticed an increase in quality of life issues in the 1600 block of West Broad Street where several individuals were drinking and causing disturbances.

He warned those who congregated in the area that they had to be on the best behavior and issued several summonses to those who continued to cause problems. His efforts resulted in a drop in service calls AND the number of people who congregate there. Good work and thank you Officer Watkins!

Today’s Good News

Kudos to Officer Andrew Nicholson who was named Third Precinct’s Officer of the Month for February! It’s not all about the numbers, but Officer Nicholson’s numbers truly speak for themselves. During the month of February, Officer Nicholson worked with Midlothian motel managers to find and arrest six violent, wanted individuals; made 30 traffic stops that resulted in 21 summonses and nine misdemeanor arrests; and, he arrested two burglary suspects after catching them in the act!

Officer Nicholson further showed his diligence during a burglary investigation on Taylor Avenue. After assisting in setting up the perimeter and capturing the suspects, Officer Nicholson didn’t stop with just interviewing the suspects about the crime. He searched the vehicle they were driving and found hidden marijuana and another confession! Good job and thank you Officer Nicholson!

But Officer Collins didn’t stop there. He was also quick to respond with two other officers when a vehicle refused to stop for a traffic infraction on Whitcomb Street. The incident turned into a brief vehicle pursuit and then foot pursuit, but with Officer Collins’ help, the two occupants were safely caught and charged with numerous felonies. Today’s Good News

Thanks to the good observation and teamwork skills of several Fourth Precinct officers, a pair of armed robbers was apprehended within an hour of the crime! Officers Doran Preston and Kimberly Drake were first on scene, interviewed the victims and broadcast the robbers’ descriptions. As Sergeants Leonard Broadnax and Michael Phibbs began setting up a perimeter near the area, Officer Frank Misiano noticed a van trying to quietly drive away. The officers and sergeants quickly surrounded the van and safely took the individuals into custody. With the assistance of Detective John T. Walker, the suspects were searched and found with the stolen property; then identified by the victims; and subsequently charged with armed robbery. Good work Fourth Precinct!
