Today’s Good News
Taking the kids trick or treating tonight? Please stay safe by accompanying all young children and encouraging them to walk—not run—from house to house and to use the sidewalk if possible rather than walk in the street. Children should also be cautioned against running out from between parked cars. Parents should also inspect all treats carefully for tampering before they are eaten. People expecting trick-or-treaters should remove anything that could be an obstacle from lawns, steps and porches. Candlelit jack-o'-lanterns should be kept away from landings and doorsteps where costumes could brush against the flame. Indoor jack-o'-lanterns should be kept away from curtains, decorations, and other furnishings that could be ignited. And finally, Happy Halloween from the Richmond Police Department!

Today’s Good News
It’s called a dumb criminal story for a reason, but we’re just glad our officers were able to make a quick arrest. A teenager recently reported to police that two men had just robbed him of money and his cell phone at gunpoint on West Baker Street. Fourth Precinct Officers Jacob Brackett and Kenneth Coleman spoke with the victim and requested a detective respond to the scene for further investigation. As Detective Mark Godwin interviewed the victim for more information, the victim suddenly spotted one of the robbers down the street. The officers quickly took him into custody. Detective Godwin then called the victim’s stolen cell phone, which rang while in the offender’s pocket. “Can you hear me now?” Good work officers!

Oct. 24 – Oct. 25, 2013

Today’s Good News
Thanks to the clever thinking of Third Precinct Detective Greg Sullivan, several burglary victims had their property recovered and four burglars were arrested in the past few weeks. Detective Sullivan investigated 34 cases last month and 10 of them were residential burglaries in which electronic items were stolen. Detective Sullivan deduced that the thieves might try to quickly sell their stolen goods so he contacted several local electronic retail stores to make them aware. His work paid off!

In two of the crimes, the businesses contacted him about someone trying to sell the stolen merchandise. His further investigation led to the thieves’ identities and arrests. Thanks to the dedication of Detective Sullivan, who often came back to work even after he had gone home for the day, he was able to return nearly $5,000 worth of stolen electronic back to the victims, arrest four individuals and solve four burglaries with the serving of 10 felony warrants for burglary and grand larceny. Good work Detective Sullivan!
