Jan. 30 – Jan. 31, 2014

Today’s Good News
Sometimes it’s the seemingly smaller, more detailed tasks that can really go a long way toward helping detectives build a case against a criminal. That was the situation earlier this month when new Recruit Chelsea Mitchell was assigned to the Department’s Computer Crimes Unit to assist the Internet Crimes Against Children Taskforce for a week. Under minimal supervisor, she assisted Detective Kevin Hiner by reviewing more than 10,000 emails and thousands of pages of documents in which she identified more victims and uncovered even more evidence for detectives.

Through Recruit Mitchell’s solid work ethic and attention to detail, she was able to save detectives more than 40 hours of work related to reviewing this evidence, and she helped make the investigation against the offender even stronger. Good work Recruit Mitchell!

Jan. 29 – Jan. 30, 2014

Today’s Good News
Rather than over the river and through the woods, two burglars recently jumped over the fence and through the woods, but it was not toward Grandma’s house to go! Instead, one would end up at the city jail and the other may soon follow thanks to some speedy First Precinct officers! Around 2 a.m. Tuesday, a citizen noticed two men inside a closed convenience store on Nine Mile Road and called police. Officer James Jennings quickly responded before he was even dispatched and spotted two men running from the business. With the assistance of Officer John Flack, they caught one of the men who was later charged with burglary, grand larceny and property damage.

Officers Timothy Fields, Ernest Ford and Justine Hewitt recovered numerous stolen items, including an assault rifle, while Detective Brian Taylor is following up on several strong leads to find the second offender. Sergeants Jayson Walter and Tish Edmonds, who found a large hole in the concrete wall used to break into the business, said the entire shift did a great job.

Jan. 28 – Jan. 29, 2014

Today’s Good News
Thanks to the speedy response of Third Precinct Officer Brian Shows and his knowledge of his sector, a man suspected of several robberies and car break-ins was recently captured. Officer Shows was dispatched one evening to an in-progress vandalism on Monument Avenue after a victim spotted a man tampering with his vehicle. Though the suspect fled the scene on bicycle, Officer Shows circulated the area until he spotted someone matching the description. Further investigation determined the man detained was the offender and he was charged accordingly. Additionally, detectives are continuing their investigation into the suspect’s likely involvement in other related crimes. Good work Officer Shows!

Jan. 27 – Jan. 28, 2014

Today’s Good News
Good memory and great intuition helped Second Precinct officers make an arrest during a routine traffic stop recently. While on patrol on Broad Rock Boulevard, Officers Brian Rogers and Justin Sumpter noticed a vehicle with a defective brake light. When officers approached the vehicle they recognized the driver for his past offenses and noticed that he was acting extremely nervous. Because of how well they knew him, they felt his behavior was highly unusual and decided to investigate further. Officers asked him to exit the vehicle and searched the car. That’s when they found a kitchen knife, a pair of brass knuckles, a fully-loaded firearm and a bag of cocaine. They subsequently arrested the man and charged him with possession of a firearm and cocaine. Great work officers!

Jan. 24 – Jan. 27, 2014

Today’s Good News
Thanks to the quick and very coordinated response by several Fourth Precinct officers and a K-9 team recently, a violent fugitive wanted out of New York was safely arrested in Richmond. New York authorities suspected the fugitive might be at a bus station in the city and Officers David Marakovitz, Michael DiSalvo, Michael Kiniry, Nicholas Stirrett and K-9 Officer Rob Gregory and K-9 Sumo went to investigate. Officer Marakovitz was the first one to spot the fugitive in line at the ticket counter. The officers then worked together quickly and quietly to safely take the man into custody without risking the lives of the numerous innocent civilians in the bus station. Good job officers!

Today’s Good News
Second Precinct Officers Kim Carter and Nathaniel Harris were in the right place at the right time recently when they noticed a man who appeared to be intoxicated in the middle of a median on Hull Street Road. As the officers watched the man cross the road, they became concerned when he was almost struck by passing cars. The officers decided to investigate, but when they stopped the man, he attempted to run away. After they safely took him custody, they discovered the reason for his actions: they found more than a dozen baggies of marijuana and other drug paraphernalia on his person. The man was subsequently charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of controlled substance, resisting arrest and drunk in public. Good work officers!

Jan. 22 – Jan. 23, 2014

Today’s Good News
Third Precinct Officer Richard Redford’s hard work, good memory and motivation recently resulted in the arrest of three different people wanted for several violent crimes. During the first incident, Officer Redford was on patrol during the midnight shift when he spotted a vehicle suspected to be involved in an armed robbery the night before. Because of his good memory, he recalled the suspect’s name and vehicle license plate number. He then developed probable cause to stop the vehicle and discovered the driver was indeed the suspect wanted for the armed robbery and he arrested her.

During another patrol, Officer Redford responded to a domestic violence call and immediately recognized a person from their wanted posted hanging up at the precinct. The person was wanted in connection to numerous burglaries in the area and this arrest will surely reduce that problem. In the third incident, Officer Redford was one of the first officers on scene of a violent robbery, but thanks to his quick thinking, he was swiftly able to identify and help find the person responsible. Good work Officer Redford!
