After Officer Larka investigated further, the man admitted to breaking into the property and was subsequently charged with three felonies. This arrest would not have been possible without Officer Larka’s quick response and solid investigative acumen. Good work!

Today’s Good News

Kudos to Officer Prabhat McDonnough-Contreras who was named Fourth Precinct’s Officer of the Month for November! Officer M-C, as he’s known, spent the month patrolling in the right places at the right times and boy did it pay off! His constant patrols in in the Highland Park area were a key factor in crime reduction and is believed to have contributed to a drastic reduction in residential burglaries in that area. During one particular incident, he was responding to investigate suspicious individuals when he heard another call two blocks away for a burglary.

Thanks to his speedy response with Officer Todd Evans, four individuals were detained and determined to be both the suspicious individuals and the burglars! They were arrested, and detectives determined that they were connected to several other burglaries in the area. Good work! Officer M-C also serves as the precinct’s Spanish translator for victims and suspects. His ability to communicate with those who have limited English speaking ability has been a huge asset not only to patrol officers, but also precinct detectives. Thank you Officer McDonnough-Contreras.

Dec. 14 – Dec. 17, 2012

Today’s Good News

Kudos to Officer Bernard Kenny who was named Third Precinct’s Officer of the Month for November! Officer Kenny showed the community the power of the pedals last month by making several good arrests while on bike patrol. As part of his assignment, Officer Kenny patrolled the alleys, both covertly and overtly. During two incidents, he spotted hand-to-hand drug transactions and was able to ride up so quietly on his bike that the offenders didn’t know he was there until it was too late! Though the offenders tried to run, they were no match for the power of the pedals!

But Officer Kenny didn’t stop there. He attended the Randolph Community Center’s monthly meeting to explain how the police bike patrol works and how it has reduced burglaries in that neighborhood by a whopping 60 percent! Officer Kenny’s positive attitude and dedicated work ethic have shown great results in Third Precinct. Thank you Officer Kenny!

Today’s Good News

Kudos to Officer Nikita Thomas who was named First Precinct’s Officer of the Month for November! Officer Thomas doesn’t wait for the calls to come to her. She works to be highly visible in Sector 112 and understands the importance of maintaining good community relationships. From volunteering for special assignments to responding to every call she can, Officer Thomas constantly strives to be a better officer.

In one particular incident last month, she recognized that several juveniles in along Fairfax Avenue were causing problems and focused her efforts there. That allowed her to respond quickly on Nov. 22 for a fight between two kids that one of the kid’s parents was encouraging! Without hesitation, she broke up the fight before anyone was seriously hurt; arrested both kids for simple assault and the father for contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Thanks to Officer Thomas’ initiative and dedication, she has made a real impact in the First Precinct community. Thank you Officer Thomas!

Dec. 11 – Dec. 12, 2012

Today’s Good News

Thanks to great community assistance and fast-responding officers, Second Precinct officers recently made a solid arrest of a man who tried to rob a business on Broad Rock Boulevard. It was the middle of the afternoon when the would-be robber tried to rob an auto store at gunpoint, but when he tried to get away, he didn’t get very far thanks to a police officer parked on one side of the business and a train going by on the other. With the assistance of witnesses yelling out the man’s location as he ran, Officers Charles Taylor, Andrew Wasiuk and Jerry Carter quickly arrested him. After Detective Patrick Brady interviewed the man, he charged him with attempted robbery, use of a firearm and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Good work everyone!

Today’s Good News

Kudos to Second Precinct officers who recently made back-to-back robbery arrests in a single night on Jefferson Davis Highway! Officer Brandy Talley responded to the first robbery and thanks to solid community cooperation, she and Officers Jason Pritchard, Juan Tejeda and Princess Washington quickly spotted and arrested a teen who robbed a man in a wheelchair. Detectives Mark Hatchett and Pedro Riddle interviewed those involved and charged the teen with robbery.

Those same detectives responded a few hours later when an elderly woman was robbed at gunpoint at a bus stop, and they quickly broadcast the robber’s description. Keen-eyed Sgt. Crystal Simmons spotted the robber’s vehicle less than six minutes later and followed it into Chesterfield County where she stopped it with the support of Officer Pritchard and Chesterfield County Police. Not only was the man identified as the robber, but evidence of the crime was also recovered inside the vehicle. Good work officers and thank you citizens for your cooperation! These crimes could not have been solved without both actions!

Today’s Good News

Sometimes it’s the tiniest pieces of evidence that help detectives solve the case. That’s exactly why they’re glad to have Major Crimes Forensics Detective Howard Gittman on the job! Detective Gittman recently helped officers search the home of a homicide suspect who they believed had used a .40-caliber firearm to commit the crime. Thanks to Detective Gittman’s good eye, he spotted a tiny price tag that was not in plain view for a .40-caliber firearm that had been recently purchased from a gun store. The homicide detective said he believed this crucial piece of evidence was only found due to Detective Gittman’s diligence and will be of huge value in the future prosecution of the suspect. Good work Detective Gittman!

Today’s Good News

First Precinct Officers Reynaldo Perez and LaTosha Lewis were recently working a traffic control assignment at 17th & East Franklin streets when they saw a man exchanging gunfire with another person in a vehicle. The officers called for backup and ran toward the fray, even as the individuals shot at the officers. They ordered the individuals to the ground and, with the assistance of other responding officers, took several individuals into custody. Thanks to their brave and selfless actions, no one was injured during the incident and several felony charges were filed. Good work officers!
