June 27 – June 28, 2013

Today’s Good News
Criminals take note: You can try, but you can’t outsmart Richmond Police. Fourth Precinct Officer Donnie Watkins is a great example of this. When vagrants noticed Officer Watkins on patrol recently they hastily threw their beer cans down a storm drain in order to avoid arrest. They were pretty proud of their actions till Officer Watkins handed them each a summons for littering. Thank you for being so observant Officer Watkins and working to address quality of life issues for residents and business owners!

Today’s Good News

Ever wonder why officers regularly stop by businesses just to check in? Here’s one example: First Precinct Detective David Cuffley stopped by a business in Shockoe Bottom last week and noticed a man acting unusually in the store before walking out and setting off the security alarms. As Detective Cuffley followed him, the man looked back, did a double take when he saw Cuffley and then took off running, throwing stolen items from his person as he fled.

Detective Cuffley gave chase, and with the assistance of several Evening Shift A/B squad officers, including Officers Matthew Robinson, Joachin Okonkwo, Adrian Jenkins, Stephen Gaines and Detective Clyde Lindsey, they safely captured the man who had jumped off a ledge and tried to hide in a wooded area near the train tracks. Further investigation revealed the man had stolen more than $700 worth of health care and beauty items. He was even found with a box of Crest teeth whitening strips in his pants. He was subsequently charged with grand larceny. Good work everyone!

With the assistance of Officer Brian Rogers, they stopped the two individuals and safely detained them. Detective Pedro Riddle and Officer Teru Hayashi interviewed the victim and several witnesses before speaking with the two suspects who they then charged with robbery. Thanks to good community involvement, keen observation skills and solid investigation, the officers also identified the third robber involved. Good work everyone!

Today’s Good News

A robber may have thought he’d gotten away with robbing two people at gunpoint downtown recently, but thanks to the good observation skills and teamwork of our officers and VCU Police, he was quickly arrested. Fourth Precinct Officers David Stone and Spenser Dean were interviewing the first victim when a call came in for a second similar robbery nearby. With the assistance of Detectives Margaret Cunningham and John T. Walker, the suspect’s description was broadcast and that’s when Officer Robert Jamison spotted an individual matching the suspect’s description riding a bike on Belvidere at Franklin Street. He tried to stop the individual, but the man refused to stop.

Nearby VCU Police Officers Cecil Powell, Jason Farrow, Surafel Wondimu and Michael Cooper then spotted the suspect and with the help of RPD Officer Michael DiSalvo safely took the man into custody after he dropped the bike and ran away. After further investigation, detectives charged the man with two counts of robbery, use of a firearm during the commission of a felony and additional charges are possible. Great work officers!

A core part of being a good police officer is building relationships within the community. Second Precinct Officer Steven Eacho has done just that by continuously interacting with residents of local communities. Thanks to his community ties, he was recently able to persuade a suspect to leave a residence after a domestic assault and surrender safely to him, keeping everyone involved in the situation from getting hurt. Keep up the good work Officer Eacho!

Today’s Good News

What started off as a defective brake light violation recently turned into a multiple felony arrest for two First Precinct officers. Officers James Jennings and Keith Mansfield stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation on Mechanicsville Turnpike, but the vehicle took off while the officers were verifying the driver’s information. The suspect crashed into a telephone pole a few blocks away and then tried to run from the officers, but they quickly and safely took him into custody. Further investigation revealed the man was wanted on 13 felony charges out of Henrico County. He was served with those right after RPD officers charged him with possession of a schedule I/II substance, possession of marijuana, driving while suspended, misdemeanor eluding police and having a defective brake light. Good work officers!

Today’s Good News

Sometimes an officer’s most powerful weapon is his words. That was certainly the case a few weeks ago when First Precinct officers responded to North 35th Street for a report of an armed man threatening to kill himself inside a residence in which he had previously threatened to hurt others earlier that evening. Focus Mission Team Officer Steven Moore was in a position close to the front door, and after hearing movement inside; he was able to engage the individual in conversation. After more than an hour of talking, he convinced the individual to exit the house and surrender safely to him and other officers. Thanks to the Focus Mission Team’s good position, response and negotiation skills, they avoided a potentially bad situation for the individual and others and made a safe arrest. Good work Focus Mission Team Officers Steven Moore, Harry Fitzpatrick, Thomas Gilbert, John Hill, Brian Parker, Russell Pearce, John Rotondi and Detective Brian Taylor!

DAILY CRIME REPORT

June 3 – 4, 2013

Today’s Good News
Kudos to Officer Stacy Rogers who was named Third Precinct’s Officer of the Month for May! If you ride a bike anywhere in or around Richmond’s park system, you know who Stacy Rogers is. Officer Rogers has taken his initial bike patrol assignment and built upon it both to the benefit of the community and the Department. For example, Rogers not only patrols the parking areas and miles and miles of trails that draw hundreds of thousands of visitors yearly, but he also patrols the neighborhoods adjacent to the parks system. He has become a fixture in the Forest Hill, Woodland Heights and Westover Hills neighborhood association meetings, which has resulted in building good relationships.
