June 9 – June 10, 2014

Today’s Good News
First Precinct Sgt. Stanley Sutton recently wrote to commend Officers Erica Maine, Joachin Okonkwo and Michael Stinger for their coordinated efforts to save a man’s life last week:

“Officer Okonkwo and Maine received a call for a male sitting on the guardrail on the Mechanicville Turnpike overpass over I-64.  Officers Okonkwo, Maine and Stinger all arrived on scene at the same time. Officers Okonkwo and Maine approached the man who immediately threw his feet over the guardrails and told the officers not to come any closer. As units from Virginia State Police and Henrico Police started arriving, the offender became more agitated then crawled down and started hanging off of the interstate sign above the westbound traffic on I-64.

“At this time Officer Maine talked to the offender and calmed him down, Officer Okonkwo took control and demanded that all the other agencies back away. Officer Stinger took control of the traffic that was flowing across the bridge and westbound on I-64.

“When I arrived on scene, Officer Maine was still keeping the offender talking and attempting to get his information while we worked to block additional traffic. Officer Maine kept the offender talking and continued to address his needs and questions while Officers Okonkwo and Stinger kept the area secure and ran the man’s information to try and get some background information.

“Officer Maine was able to get the man’s wallet and mother’s name and number.  Officer Maine kept this man talking for a little over an hour until the hostage negotiators arrived.  Prior to the hostage negotiators arrival, Officer Maine had the man agreeing to come back up on the bridge if all the other officers didn’t rush him.

“Within minutes off the hostage negotiators arrival, the man came back up on the bridge and eventually agreed to go to the hospital voluntarily. All of the officers received congrats on an outstanding job from Unit 9 Capt. Yvonne Crowder, Henrico Police and the all of the Virginia State Police personnel on scene. The negotiators also sent me messages to commend Officer Maine on an outstanding job she did talking to the offender.” Kudos to Officers Maine, Okonkwo and Stinger!
