May 15 – May 16, 2014

Today’s Good News
A Richmond Fire Department lieutenant recently emailed to commend the joint efforts of Richmond Police, Richmond Fire, VCU Police, the Richmond Ambulance Authority and the Richmond Behavioral Health Authority that likely saved a troubled man’s life. Early one morning, agencies were called to an address of a report of a man dangerously climbing the building and threatening to jump. When he refused to come down after speaking with RAAMES, RFD and VCUPD, Fourth Precinct RPD Lt. Lewis Mills responded to assist.

“Lt. Mills recognized the uniqueness of this situation and recommended a unified command approach involving all agencies and established a temporary command post,” the fire lieutenant wrote. “Understanding that Incident Command System is a relatively unchartered territory for police agencies, this was a well received and appropriate course of action, which led to a coordinated response effort, and the successful end to a situation that could have turned tragic.”

Over the next 45 minutes, a dialogue continued with the man who was finally talked down safely by George Chambers, a member of the RBHA crisis team.

“As public safety agencies for the city, we often focus so greatly on our Department’s mission that we can lose sight of the overall picture,” the fire lieutenant wrote. “That was definitely not the case for this incident and I believe those involved should be commended for their efforts.”
