Feb. 24 – Feb. 27, 2012

Today’s Safety Tip
Though it may be chilly in the morning, please resist the urge to leave your car unattended if you warm it up. We have seen a number of car thefts across the city because of people leaving their cars unattended, running and unlocked with keys inside. While it may be inconvenient to get into a cold car, it’s far more inconvenient to have your car stolen, have to file a police report and find new means of transportation.

Today’s Good News
Third Precinct officers and K9 Officer Walter Stone and K9 Macon recently responded to a house on South Lombardy Street for a report of someone stealing copper. Officers searched the house, but found no one. As they walked out, K9 Macon pulled toward a crawl space door on the side of the home. The closer he got to the door, the more K9 Macon alerted. Officer Stone yelled out a warning and the suspect crawled out from under the house with a bag of copper piping. He was charged with burglary and grand larceny. Thanks to the keen senses of K9 Macon and experience of Officer Stone, a good arrest was made with incident or injury. Good job!

Today’s Good News
Second Precinct Officer William Bingham recently picked up information about a man wanted for nine felonies. He researched who the man’s friends and family were, where they lived and then went out looking for him in those areas. At one house, he left his cell phone number, asking that the wanted man call him if he came by. A few hours later, the wanted man called Officer Bingham and they arranged for an in-person chat. Before they met, Officer Bingham discovered the man was actually wanted for 19 felony warrants and took him into custody without incident. “He did some bad stuff,” Bingham said. “He needs to get off the street because he would have continued doing what he was doing.”
