Today’s Good News
Kudos to Officer James Jennings who was named First Precinct’s Officer of the Month for May! Nicknamed “Tiger,” Officer Jennings is one of the newer officers on the force, but that doesn’t stop him from stepping up when the situation calls for it. He showed great maturity and his ability to handle stressful situations on May 21 when he was the first officer to respond to a shooting call that turned out to be a homicide. On scene in less than two minutes, he found the victim, quickly assessed the situation and began taking control of the incident.
He secured the crime scene, clearing it of onlookers and took it upon himself to create and be in charge of the crime scene roster rather than assume someone else would do it. He was also instrumental in identifying and detaining potential witnesses. His quick work helped bring a chaotic crime scene under control and made sure that crucial evidence was preserved. Good work and thank you Officer Jennings!

I wanted to let you know because I was so proud this colleague had this experience in the City of Richmond. Thank you.”

I wanted to let you know because I was so proud this colleague had this experience in the City of Richmond. Thank you.”

Today’s Good News
Thanks to a quick response and good observation skills, several Second Precinct officers recently made a swift arrest of two juveniles who robbed a man at gunpoint on Belt Boulevard. Officers John Perez, Princess Washington and Sopheap Chamreun were first on scene, interviewed the victim and broadcast detailed suspect descriptions. A short time later, Officer Kevin Knudsen noticed a large group of individuals a few streets away and spotted two men who matched the suspects’ descriptions. With the assistance of Officer Washington, Detective Derrick Longoria and Sgt. R.P. Jones, the men were detained, identified and charged with armed robbery. Good work everyone!

Today’s Good News
It’s often the average patrolling of officers that does the most good in fighting crime in specific locations. For example, Second Precinct Focus Mission Team Officers Robert Langston, Michael Spinos, Daniel Awad, Obie Arrington, Jason Holt, Nicholas Caesar and Richard McTernan were recently walking in a neighborhood off of Walmsley Terrace when a man suddenly took off running after seeing them. As he ran, the officers could hear the sound of items being dropped. The officers gave chase and safely arrested him without incident. As they retraced his steps, they recovered drugs and an illegal firearm as the man is a convicted felon and the gun was reported stolen. Further investigation revealed the man also fits the description of a recent robbery suspect. Detectives were notified of that fact, the man was charged with several crimes and further investigation is ongoing. Good work officers!

Today’s Good News
Just before midnight earlier this week, a man tried to burglarize a business on Hull Street Road by climbing through a vent and air duct on the roof. However, the ceiling wasn’t as sturdy as he thought, leading to his tumble into the store. Unaware that he had set off the silent alarm, the man grabbed a shopping cart and began filling it with items. Minutes later, Second Precinct Officers K’Lynne Robinson and Matthew Wessler cautiously entered the store to investigate and the man tried to escape by running out of the back of the store. However, he ran smack into Officers Billy Gilbert, Teru Hayashi, Loynell Jefferson and Sergeants Frank Scarpa and James Hale, who safely took him into custody. With the assistance of Detective Derrick Longoria, the man was interviewed and charged with burglary. Good teamwork!

Today’s Good News
Sometimes it’s the behind-the-scenes policing that affects the most change in areas. First Precinct Sergeant Keith Dohl is one such motivator in the neighborhoods of Sector 113, which includes Whitcomb, Mosby, Eastview, Fairmont, Fairfield, Peter Paul, Creighton and Woodville. Sergeant Dohl, who is known as a man of few words, quietly yet effectively motivates his platoon of patrol officers by words and actions. He joined his platoon for a targeted walking patrol initiative last month, and as a result of their efforts the number of property crimes dropped dramatically. In additional to coming into work on his days off to attend community meetings that keep the residents informed, Sergeant Dohl was also the first precinct sergeant to meet the first quarter challenge of holding an outdoor roll call, conducting an initiative and attending one community meeting to improve community relationships. Good work and thank you Sergeant Dohl!

Today’s Good News
A man recently robbed a business on West Broad Street, but thanks to community involvement, the quick response of Third Precinct Officers Naitraj David and Willie O’Neil and good investigation by Detective Eric Sandlin, the man didn’t get away with the crime. Minutes after the business was robbed, a citizen flagged down the officers and told them about the robber getting into a specific vehicle. The officers then spotted the robber’s vehicle on West Clay Street and attempted to stop it. When the vehicle refused to stop, the officers ended the pursuit for safety reasons, but were able to gather enough information that helped the detective identify the man involved. A few days later, the man surrendered to Detective Sandlin and was charged with robbery. Good work everyone!

Today’s Good News
First Precinct Officers Michael Robinson and Michael Ahnstrom recently responded to investigate the robbery of a man trying to sell his vehicle, but the robber didn’t get far thanks to their quick response and the detective’s good investigation. During the test ride, the robber pulled out a gun and robbed the victim of cash before escaping in a second vehicle. But Officer Robinson spotted the second vehicle a few streets away and arrested one of the men inside. With the assistance and further investigation by Detective Adrian Partain, that man was charged with robbery and use of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and the second offender was later identified and charged. Good work everyone!

Today’s Good News
By car, by foot or by paw, Richmond Police officers will catch their criminal. That was the case recently when Fourth Precinct Sergeant Percy Smith observed a stolen car being driven down Laburnum Avenue. Sergeant Smith stopped the vehicle, but the driver jumped out and ran away. Though Sergeant Smith lost sight of him, Officer Nicholas Stirrett spotted the man nearby and pursued him on foot down MacArthur Avenue before the man turned a corner and disappeared. That’s when K-9 Officer Sammy Hernandez and K-9 Niko responded and tracked the offender’s scent through the alley until Niko found him hiding in a yard behind a home on Avondale Road. They then arrested the man without incident and charged him with several crimes. Good teamwork!

Today’s Good News
Kudos to Officer Ashley Wood who was named Fourth Precinct’s Officer of the Month for April! Sometimes catching the criminals is easy. It certainly was for Officer Wood when she responded to a burglary in early April where the offenders had stolen prescription medication from an elderly woman. As Officer Wood examined the kicked-in door, she noticed several shoes prints on the door and stairs in the heavy pollen. She then followed the footprints down a set of outdoor stairs to the apartment below.
After smelling marijuana, she placed both occupants in custody and, with their permission, searched the residence where she found the matching shoes to the upstairs burglary. After further investigation, both occupants were arrested and charged with burglary.
Later in the month, a detective wrote a letter to commend Officer Wood’s good work during a shooting investigation that helped identify the underlying motive in the case as well as the existence of a previously unknown witness. Good job and thank you Officer Wood!

Today’s Good News
Kudos to Officer Anthony Paciello who was named Third Precinct’s Officer of the Month for April! Because Officer Paciello is a Police Bicycle Instructor, he jumps at every chance when he can educate the community about the importance of such patrols as well as teach his fellow officers about two-wheeled patrols. During the past month, VCU Police requested his help with putting on a bike school and his instruction during the class. He also volunteered to assist Westover Hills Elementary School by speaking with the children and teachers about what police officers do as well as going on a walk with them.
Additionally, when a sector business complained of repeated shoplifters, Officer Paciello took the initiative and organized a coordinated undercover response that has greatly reduced the number of complaints. He also worked with many business owners to develop good relationships that have resulted in the successful prosecution of trespassers and shoplifters. Good job and thank you Officer Paciello!

Today’s Good News
Kudos to Officer Gaetano Drago who was named First Precinct’s Officer of the Month for April! The Department teaches our officers that it’s all about community policing, but Officer Drago has taken that to a whole new level with his relationship building in Sector 111. In one instance, Officer Drago arrested a man for cocaine possession and a month later that same man sought out Officer Drago to help him remove two unwanted drug users from his home, which he had cleaned up to start a new life.
Officer Drago takes the initiative to help compile information about the crimes in his sector so that the can come up with the best coordinated response from multiple Department divisions. He took note of one particular drug house on North 27th Street last month and engaged both narcotics and Major Crimes detectives to develop information and connect multiple drug dealers and robbery suspects. That coordinated teamwork resulted in several arrests that cleared multiple crimes as well as drug and firearm seizures. And the information is still coming in! Good job and thank you Officer Drago!
