Today’s Good News

First Precinct Officer Matthew Robinson responded Sunday night to investigate a silent 911 call from a home on Oakwood Avenue, but quickly discovered something else was going on. As he walked up to the residence, he smelled marijuana and spotted a known wanted individual at the house. After the residence was secured and a search warrant obtained, officers later found and seized cocaine, marijuana, drug packaging materials, one firearm and cash. Their investigation also resulted in the arrest of two individuals for 15 felonies, two misdemeanors and three warrants. Officer Robinson also seized two additional illegally-possessed firearms during the rest of his shift. Keep up the good work Officer Robinson!

Today’s Good News

Warrants Officer Kim Pulley may have been stationed at a desk, but she immediately knew something was suspicious recently when a “friend” of a man wanted for murder called the desk to see if the man had any warrants on file. Though Officer Pulley knew about the conspiracy to commit murder warrant, she advised the caller that the man had no warrants and noted his phone number to pass along to Major Crimes detectives.

Prior to Officer Pulley’s actions, detectives had been unable to locate this suspect despite several attempts. Thanks to her attention to detail and quick thinking, detectives were able to use the information to find and arrest the suspect without incident as well as recover pertinent evidence related to the investigation. Without her good work, it’s likely the suspect would have attempted to flee and evidence would have been destroyed. Good job Officer Pulley!

The Richmond Police Department is proud to invite the community to the promotions ceremony of Detective Patrick Brady, Officer Jeremy Nierman and Sergeant Stanley Sutton today at 2 p.m. today in Room 103 of the Richmond Police Training Academy 1202 W. Graham Road. “These officers have already shown immense ability and a self-generated drive towards leadership,” Chief Ray J. Tarasovic said. “They have led their fellow officers with a determined work ethic, problem-solving skills and teamwork. I look forward to these professionals growing even further as sergeants.”

Sgt. Brady has been with the Department for more than 12 years, all of which he has spent at Second Precinct from the patrol to detective level. What Sgt. Brady loves most about police work is the exciting variety of the job and he can’t wait to learn even more as steps into his new role as sergeant.

Sgt. Nierman has been with Richmond Police for more than seven years, all of which has also been spent at Second Precinct as well. Sgt. Nierman said he became a police officer because he wanted to make a positive difference in the community and he plans to continue that mission as a sergeant.

Sgt. Sutton has been with the Department for eight years, and recently returned from serving his country on military leave overseas. He was most recently assigned to Second Precinct, where his defining characteristic, his lieutenant says, is his professionalism. When Sutton is involved with a project, assignment or operation – the result is always, 'Mission Accomplished.' The Marine Corps had the benefit of Sutton's skills and passionate service at the time of his initial promotion in December, but the Department is now happy to have him back and celebrate his accomplishment.

Today’s Good News

The police officer’s creed is To Protect and Serve, but on Monday night Second Precinct Officer Todd Hall added Save Lives to his mission. He was one of the first officers to arrive at the scene where three individuals had been shot, one fatally. It could have easily been two deaths had it not been for the quick thinking and actions of Officer Hall. When he found one of the victims suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper left leg, he quickly applied a tourniquet to stop the blood flow.  According to VCU Medical Center staff, this injury would have been fatal had it not been for his actions that night.

“I’m incredibly proud of Officer Hall’s quick thinking and swift actions that night,” Second Precinct Captain Marty Harrison said. “Were it not for his skills, knowledge and speedy response, this citizen could have died.”

Officer Hall, a combat medic in the Navy who also has prior EMT experience and serves as the Crowd Management Team medic, recently completed the Virginia State Police tactical medic course to enhance his knowledge. The Department is proud and grateful to have such a skilled officer on the force!

Richmond Police K-9 Phantom took a bite out of crime early Tuesday morning when he searched a building and apprehended a burglary suspect within one minute. Shortly after 3:30 a.m. yesterday, Second Precinct Officer John Edwards responded to a burglary call at a building on Midlothian Turnpike and spotted a man inside briefly before losing sight of him. K-9 Officer Monty Agee and K-9 Phantom were called to search the building and though they announced that Phantom would be released several times, the burglar stayed hidden until Phantom apprehended him trying to escape through a very small window. With the assistance of Officer Luther Burdette and Detective Pedro Riddle, the man was taken to the precinct, interviewed and confessed to breaking into the building to steal items. Good work officers and K-9 Phantom!

During a recent breakfast with the Department’s Faith Leaders Partnership, a citizen captured Neighborhood Watch Officer Paul Lewis in the middle of this kind act. The woman, who is blind, was dropped off by a citizen and Officer Lewis immediately went to assist her in safely crossing the street and entering the Training Academy. Though it may be a simple deed, Officer Lewis’s kindness stuck in this citizen’s mind and he wanted to let us know just how thoughtful Officer Lewis had been. Thank you, Officer Lewis, for making us proud, and thank you, citizen, for sharing this with us!
