Nov. 7 – Nov. 8, 2013

Today’s Good News
Kudos to Officer Steve Gibson who was named Third Precinct’s Officer of the Month for October! Third Precinct supervisors may sometimes have trouble finding newly minted Master Patrol Officer Gibson, but that’s not because he’s MIA. It’s because he keeps so busy--finding wanted parties, conducting traffic stops and elevating his investigative skills—that he’s rarely in one place for long.

Here are just a few examples from the past month:
*he located 4 people wanted for violent crimes, making the streets safer by arresting them,
*he made 32 traffic stops resulting in 3 summonses, 2 misdemeanor arrests and 1 felony arrest, and,
*his detention and investigation of a shoplifting suspect resulted in the offender’s confession to multiple larcenies and a felony grand larceny arrest. Thank you and good job, Master Patrol Officer Steve Gibson!

Today’s Good News
Kudos to Officer Robert Taylor who was named Second Precinct’s Officer of the Month for October! Officer Taylor ran more than 70 calls last month and assisted several officers with incidents, but it was a situation on Oct. 17 that really showcased his skills as a police officer who cares about his community.

He took charge of a call about a suicidal veteran who had cut himself and was hiding in a wooded area. Officer Taylor was able to find a phone number and make contact with the man. He then developed a rapport with him based on their experiences in the military and as combat veterans. Through that conversation, he was able to find the man’s location, and even though the man had lost a pint of blood, Officer Taylor was able to stop the bleeding and stabilize him until he could be transported to the hospital. Officer Taylor even stayed with the man until he was admitted. Thank you and good work, Officer Robert Taylor!

Today’s Good News
Kudos to Officer Stephen Butler who was named First Precinct’s Officer of the Month for October! Officer Butler may be known for his constant smile and outgoing personality, but he’s also known for his dedication to combating violent crime in Sector 113. Despite changing schedules last month, he made 10 felony arrests, 8 misdemeanors arrests, served 14 warrants, seized 2 firearms and made several drugs arrests.

He constantly works to keep himself familiar with all the citizens he encounters, which paid off during a patrol in the Fairfield area one day. He approached a group of individuals standing in the middle of the road and when man intentionally turned his body, Officer Butler investigated further and discovered a hidden firearm with a laser sight. Further investigation revealed the man was a convicted robber. He was quickly arrested and charged. Officer Butler also takes the time to attend community meetings to develop relationships and keep citizens aware of what’s going on in their neighborhoods. He brings back information about problems to his lieutenant so issues can be addressed. Thank you and congratulations Officer Stephen Butler!

Today’s Good News
A woman recently emailed to thank First Precinct Lieutenants Jeremy Sayles and Dan Minton after she got lost around VCU Medical Center while trying to find the proper entrance to visit a family member. “As I am sure you know, this hospital and this area can be very confusing, especially to someone unfamiliar with the area,” she wrote.

“Two very professional and helpful officers went above and beyond helping me find the right entrance. They made a phone call, Googled, etc. until they were able to find the correct entrance. Then, they were good enough to escort me there. I would have probably give up and never found my sister if it were not for Lt. Daniel Minton and Lt. Jeremy Sayles. God Bless them both. The world would be a much better place if more men were like these wonderful gentlemen.”

Today’s Good News
Kudos to Fourth Precinct Detective Mark Godwin who was named the Department’s Problem Solver of the Month for October! Since joining the unit four months ago, Detective Godwin has secured a 100 percent robbery clearance rate for the 6 cases assigned to him as well as a higher-than-the-national average clearance rate for his investigations into other crimes.

Detective Godwin’s hunch during one robbery investigation in particular sealed the deal. As he was interviewing a victim whose cell phone had been stolen, the offender was spotted nearby and quickly detained. On a hunch, Detective Godwin called the victim’s stolen cell phone, which then rang while in the offender’s hand inside his pocket! But Detective Godwin also goes above and beyond to help his fellow detectives when they need it and to develop good relationships with concerned citizens, allowing him to gather information more easily and solve several cases throughout the Department. Thank you, and congratulations to Detective Mark Godwin!

RICHMOND POLICE DEPARTMENT
DAILY CRIME REPORT

Oct. 31 – Nov. 1, 2013

Today’s Good News
Fourth Precinct Officers Keary Lightfoot and Robert Knight were patrolling on St. Paul Street recently when they noticed a parked vehicle that was idling without a driver and blocking the roadway. As they investigated further, a man ran toward the vehicle, saying it was his. Because the man appeared to be under the influence, the officers investigated further and discovered drugs and open containers of alcohol inside the vehicle. With the assistance of Officers Aaron Henning, Joseph Balducci and Anthony McRae, further investigation revealed more drugs and firearms inside the vehicle and a nearby residence. Officers then charged the man with several offenses, including possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession with intent to distribute marijuana. Good work officers!
