Today’s Good News

Kudos to Officer Robert Taylor who was named Second Precinct’s Officer of the Month for September! “Big Country”--as one citizen calls Officer Taylor—knows how to talk to people and treat them right.  He certainly did that last month when he responded to 151 calls for service and assisted on 55 calls. He also partnered with his fellow sector officers to conduct several community roll calls along Jeff Davis and Ruffin Road as well as several foot patrols and truancy sweeps. His goal is to interact with citizens, identify neighborhood problems and arrest those causing the problem.

Officer Taylor always takes great pride in being a field training officer and teaching the new officers how to do their job in the best, safest and most efficient manner. During the month, he and his recent Academy graduate, Officer Raymond Misegades made several good arrests together of a copper theft suspect, a burglary suspect and a domestic assault suspect who attempted to hide in the woods. Thank you, and congratulations Officer Taylor!

Today’s Good News

We police officers do appreciate it when the criminals make it easy for us to find them. That was the case this past weekend when a man robbed a convenience store at knifepoint and then chose two interesting forms of getaway transportation. After interviewing the store employee, First Precinct Officer James Peck broadcast the robber’s description and the fact that he fled the scene riding a silver bicycle with bright pink handlebars.

Approximately 20 minutes later, Sergeant Keith Dohl spotted the man with his distinct bicycle getting onto a bus and putting the bike on the front cage. With the assistance of Officers Chris Linn, Jerry Baskette and Sergeant Bill Chorney, the officers stopped the bus and safely took the man into custody without incident. After being interviewed by Detective Calvin Layne, the man confessed to the crime and was charged accordingly. Though the officers credited the good arrest to them just doing their job, they admitted that the pink handlebars did make it easier for them to spot the offender. Good work everyone!

Today’s Good News

Kudos to Communications Officer Tiffany Ampy who was named the Department’s Communications Officer of the Month for September! Even a quick look at the work of CO Ampy shows she is well on her way to a successful career. Ten months ago, CO Ampy was certified as a training officer and has been recognized for her exemplary work since.

One highlight leaps straight off the page: CO Ampy was on the service channel with an officer who requested information on a wanted person – when the subject fled from the officer and dashed through a wooded area. CO Ampy calmly called additional units, requested a supervisor to monitor the situation – and deftly coordinated all the moving units as they eventually made the arrest. Her work was not done, however, as she then entered an EMS event due to the scrapes and cuts the officers received pursuing through the wooded area. Good job. Thank you and congratulations CO Ampy!

Today’s Good News

Kudos to Fourth Precinct Detective Margaret Cunningham who was named the Department’s Problem Solver of the Month for September! When different groups of burglars kept breaking into homes in the Bellevue neighborhood last month, it was she who found different ways to monitor, identify and arrest the offenders. In the first cluster of burglaries, Detective Cunningham only had the use of a stolen credit card, but that was enough to lead her to surveillance video and then identifying the suspects. Though she couldn’t charge the pair with as many crimes as she suspected them of, crime dropped off significantly after their arrest.

During the second and third cluster of burglaries in a nearby neighborhood, Detective Cunningham worked with officers to develop and arrest the suspects as well as increased surveillance and patrols. This great work is just part for the course for the dedicated Detective Cunningham. Thank you and congratulations!

Today’s Good News

An elderly man recently wrote to commend Fourth Precinct Officer Kaneka McQueen for the help she provided him when he could not remember where he parked his car. Officer McQueen drove him around the Scott’s Addition neighborhood looking for the car and when they couldn’t find it, she dropped him off nearby to a waiting friend. But before she began the paperwork to report it stolen, she searched the area one more time and finally found his car.

The man was so impressed with Officer McQueen’s efforts that he wrote a glowing letter praising her service. “I had no idea police did things like this,” he wrote. “Officer McQueen’s hard work makes me proud to be a Richmond citizen and taxpayer. Thank you Officer McQueen!”

Today’s Good News

One thief recently thought he was all that and a bag of chips. Or rather, three cases of chips as that’s what he stole off the back of a delivery truck downtown. But he didn’t get far thanks to the teamwork of Richmond Police and the Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority Police! RRHA Police Officer Emmanuel Spann spotted the suspect walking down an alley carrying three boxes of chips and with the assistance of Fourth Precinct Officer Ruddy Zhao detained him. After further investigation, officers determine the tasty snack sacks—worth about $75--were stolen from the delivery truck. The man was then charged with felony petit larceny and three additional outstanding warrants that were on file. He had no comment when asked whether Ruffles really do have ridges. Apparently, you can’t eat—or steal—just one! Good work officers!
