Today’s Good News

Kudos to Officer George Soongnarata who was named Fourth Precinct’s Officer of the Month for May! Officer Soongnarata is an instrumental evening shift officer who likes to stay busy. Last month, he answered 154 radio calls, assisted on 25 other calls and initiated 18 sight calls. He recently focused on field interview reports to note suspicious individuals in a particular area. By the end of the month, he led his sector by compiling 52 FIRs.

Another example of his professionalism and dedication to duty was his response with another officer to a possible suicide attempt. After gathering information about the individual, he responded to the residence and decided to enter the home given the exigent circumstances. They found the victim unconscious in the bathtub and pulled her out before turning her over to Fire and EMS to perform medical services. That woman is alive and well today thanks in part to his efforts. Thank you and congratulations to Officer George Soongnarata!

Kudos to Third Precinct Sergeant Anthony Papaleo who was named the Department’s Sergeant of the Month for May! Sergeant Papaleo displays many of the great qualities of a leader such as finding good ways to motivate his officers, leading from the front and taking the time to mentor younger officers.

He often attends neighborhood meetings to hear residents’ complaints and then encourages his officers to come up with the best ways to address the issues. Two such initiatives have reduced burglaries, boosted employee morale and taught officers about conducting surveillance.

However, one of Sergeant Papaleo’s biggest accomplishments was the conclusion of a three-month investigation during which he took the lead to find and identify several victims in an unlawful filming case. When another law enforcement agency couldn’t make contact with one of the victims, Sergeant Papaleo and another officer drove to another state and worked with local law enforcement to have the victim identify herself and help justify several of the pending charges. The end result was a 19-felony-count indictment against the offender! Thank you and congratulations to Sergeant Papaleo!

Today’s Good News

Ever wonder why officers are so insistent about people showing them their hands during an encounter? Here’s why: Fourth Precinct Officers John Story and Justin Miller recently stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation, but the driver and passenger jumped out of the car and ran away. Officers gave chase and caught up to the driver a few blocks away. But the man, who officers noticed kept one hand at his waistband even while he ran, refused to remove his hands from under his body even as officers tried to safety take him into custody.

Once he was in handcuffs, officers discovered a firearm on his person and seized it. After further investigation with the assistance of Officer Gene Carter and after noticing his body movements during their interviews, they discovered drugs hidden on him as well. He was arrested and charged accordingly. Good work officers!

A Second Precinct sergeant recently wrote to commend First Precinct Officer David Woods for his actions during a shooting that occurred Monday. “I just wanted to let you know what an outstanding job Officer Woods did (even though) he was working off duty on Hull Street when the shooting occurred. He responded immediately and started helping us out with a chaotic scene that was actually two scenes and several vehicles leaving the area,” the sergeant wrote.

“Officer Woods not only responded and offered assistance there on scene, but noticed that an ambulance had left the scene to take one victim to the hospital without an officer following. Officer Woods quickly followed and stayed with the victim for several hours until other officers could control the scene and send another officer to relieve him. Please thank him again for me and my platoon.”

Today’s Good News

Thanks to the keen eyes of VCU Police and good detective work by Third Precinct investigators, a man who robbed another man in the Fan was arrested in less than 30 minutes on Friday night! Officer Marley Williams was the first officer on scene and after interviewing the victim, she quickly broadcast the suspect’s description and last known direction of travel.

Approximately 24 minutes later, VCU Police Officer Chelsey Cocke spotted a man matching that description. With the assistance of VCU Police Officer Matthew McCarty, Sgt. Kyle Frail and Cpl. Mark Bailey, they safely took him into custody, finding both a firearm and the stolen property. After further investigation by Detective Charles Kane, the man confessed to the robbery and was charged accordingly. Great teamwork VCUPD and RPD!
