Today’s Good News
A man recently emailed to thank and commend Fourth Precinct Detectives Patrick Mansfield and Officer Darryl Lee for their response and actions after he was robbed downtown. “They were both very professional, respectful and they really helped me deal with the robbery right after it occurred,” he wrote. “Today in the news there is a plethora of police corruption, but Officers like D. Lee and Detective Mansfield are working very hard to fight that stereotype. Thanks for all your help.”

Today's Good News:
Kudos to Communications Officer Supervisor Mark C. Williams who was named the Department’s Communications Supervisor of the Quarter! Mark Williams is a well-known face at the Division of Emergency Communications. The long-time communications officer supervisor has worked at DEC for nearly 30 years, rising up from the ranks of communications officer to assistant supervisor and then communications supervisor.

He’s done this by not only being good at his job, but also by teaching others, which is a critical part of any division’s success. Under his tutelage, the Training Unit is responsible for overseeing trainee development, supervisory development, quality assurance, VCIN/TAC responsibilities and fire communications.

Additional projects include organizing the DEC Hiring Blitzes, Department of Criminal Justice Services inspection, modifying General Orders relating to DEC operations and preparing for the 19th Basic Dispatch Academy and the upcoming DEC Fire Academy.

Wow. Even though COS Williams’ position is extremely challenging, he continues to lead DEC in achieving professional distinction. In large part because of his hard work, DEC is progressing toward several professional certifications and accreditation. That’s great work! Thank you and congratulations to Communications Officer Supervisor Mark Williams, our Communications Supervisor of the Quarter!

Today’s Good News
Kudos to Second Precinct Sergeant Crystal Simmons who was named the Department’s Sergeant of the Month for March! With people like Sergeant Simmons leading our officers in the field, the Department is in good hands.

Just this past month, Sergeant Simmons coordinated bike patrols, directed patrols, warrant sweeps, truancy sweeps and outdoor roll calls. She is a veteran of Second Precinct with a vast knowledge of the area and the individuals within it. But more importantly, she has worked diligently with her fellow sergeants and newer officers to share this knowledge, which goes a long way toward making officers more productive and better equipped to investigate crimes.

One of her problem-solving initiatives last month resulted in a substantial reduction in crime in the Reedy Creek neighborhood. While working with her officers, she came up with the idea to use a detective vehicle for covert patrols in the targeted areas. This initiative allowed officers to observe, identify and arrest suspects for a variety of crimes. End result? A whopping 87.5 percent reduction in Reedy Creek’s Major Crime numbers!

Additionally, this type of project also has another benefit because it improves officer morale by changing the daily routine and allowing officers to creatively attack problem areas. Thank you and good work, Second Precinct Sergeant Crystal Simmons, our Sergeant of the Month!

April 24 – April 25, 2014

Today’s Good News
Kudos to Fourth Precinct Detective Todd Perseghin who was named the Department’s Problem Solver of the Month for March! Detective Perseghin is the type of detective who can’t stop once his interest in a case is piqued. Even when he’s assigned several cases of his own, he still makes the time to investigate others.

For example, last month he spoke with two victims who reported a known associate had been forging checks from their account. Thanks to Detective Perseghin’s methodical and detailed investigation, he determined that more than $85,000 had been stolen and he’s now in the process of working with banks to gather more evidence that will likely lead to a substantial prosecution in Federal Court.

He also comes through for his fellow detectives when they need help. Case in point: On March 18, detectives from a nearby jurisdiction called RPD after they arrested several individuals for a series of crimes because they knew RPD also had pending investigations. However, the case detective was on vacation so Perseghin stepped up and responded to interview the suspects. He spent his entire shift and more interviewing the suspects and thanks to his efforts, he gathered enough information to clear the two RPD crimes.

These are just some of the reasons Detective Todd Perseghin is our Problem Solver of the Month for March! Thank you and congratulations!

April 23 – April 24, 2014

Today’s Good News
Kudos to Communications Officer Stacy McKinley-Roehm who was named the Department’s Communications Officer of the Month for March! One of the only good things to come from tragedy is what it teaches us about how to better respond to such situations. At the Division of Emergency Communications, CO McKinley-Roehm took this to heart when she attended the APCO-NENA fall conference in Roanoke this past fall.

After hearing from the 911 Center director in Newtown, Connecticut, which handled the Sandy Hook shootings, CO McKinley-Roehm realized that our DEC did not have an Active Shooter policy. She felt it was important for her coworkers to be as prepared as possible should the unthinkable occur. So she attended the FEMA/Emergency Management Institute Active Shooter Course and began working with CO Supervisor James Gwynne and Training Officer Jerome Andrzejzak to draft a policy.

She reviewed similar policies from other jurisdictions and played an instrumental role in outlining the Telecommunicator’s Role into a Standard Operating Procedure. She then submitted a draft of the policy to the DEC Command Staff for approval. CO McKinley-Roehm has gone above and beyond the expectations of a communications officer, taking advantage of every opportunity for training and making sure to share her knowledge with her coworkers. This makes DEC better for communications officers AND the community.

Thank you and congratulations to Communications Officer Stacy McKinley-Roehm, our Communications Officer of the Month!
